Till errors in a restaurant: the cost nobody counts
Forgotten dish, mis-added bill, an order re-keyed wrong: till errors eat your margin in silence. Where they come from, and how a well-designed system makes them disappear.
A till error makes no noise. A dish rung up but not charged, a discount applied twice, a bill mis-added mid-service: each little leak is painless in the moment, but added up over a year, they add up. The problem is nobody ever counts them.
Where the errors come from
- Double entry: the order is taken on a pad, then re-keyed at the till. Every re-keying is a chance to slip.
- The rush: at peak, you go fast, forget a drink, add up by hand.
- An out-of-date menu: a changed price that didn’t follow everywhere.
- Dish modifications: a “no onion” or an extra that’s said out loud and lost between the floor and the kitchen.
What it really costs
The cost isn’t just the money lost on the bill. It’s also:
- the time spent correcting, re-checking, re-counting the till at night;
- the friction in the kitchen when the order doesn’t match;
- the unhappy customer when the bill is wrong.
Hard to price exactly — but every restaurateur knows it exists and wears you down.
How a good system stops the leak
The logic is simple: one single entry, from order to bill. The waiter (or the customer via a QR) records the order once. It goes to the kitchen as is, adds to the table, and appears identical on the bill. No re-keying, no copying, no gaps between steps.
Add a till where the owner can track sales and spot anomalies in real time, and where receipts can’t be quietly altered (you correct, you never delete), and the leak closes.
