Electronic invoicing in 2026: where the UK really stands
E-invoicing is becoming mandatory across Europe. The UK has no general B2B mandate yet — but Making Tax Digital already applies. What it means for your business, honestly.
Across Europe, electronic invoicing is going from “nice to have” to legal obligation. France, Spain, Portugal and others are rolling out mandatory e-invoicing between businesses. It’s fair to ask: what about the UK?
The honest answer for the UK
Let’s be straight: there is no general mandate for B2B electronic invoicing in the UK. Anyone telling you that you must switch to e-invoices tomorrow is overselling it.
What does already apply is Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT: VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and file VAT returns using compatible software. That’s the direction of travel — HMRC wants tax to be digital, and the government has been consulting on wider e-invoicing. A UK move could come, but as things stand it isn’t a blanket obligation.
Why it still matters to you
Two reasons this isn’t something to ignore:
- If you trade with the EU, you will increasingly meet e-invoicing requirements from the other side — your European customers and suppliers are already on that path.
- The wider point is digital readiness. Whether or not a mandate lands, the businesses that keep clean digital records and modern tools are the ones that adapt without stress. The rest scramble when a deadline finally arrives.
Our position, plainly
To be clear: issuing compliant invoices is done with proper accounting or invoicing software — that isn’t our job. We don’t sell invoicing tools, and we’d rather tell you that than sell you smoke.
What we do care about is the bigger signal. This shift is one sign among many that businesses which aren’t digitally up to date fall behind — and not only on their paperwork. A fast, professional website, being found on Google, modern tools for your customers: that’s the foundation everything else sits on.
Getting ahead is the advantage
E-invoicing is just one piece. The real question is simpler: is your business presented and equipped to the standard of 2026? That’s where we come in — making sure your online presence is modern, fast and ready for whatever comes next.
If you’d like to take stock of your digital presence, let’s talk: the review is free and with no obligation.
